Why ENCE 625

Students, professionals, practitioners, designers, owners, contractors, and construction managers in project management will gain knowledge of the pertinent topics in each stage of a construction project as they occur throughout the life of the project. Students learn how to unite the key stakeholders including contractors, architects, engineers, and owners, and provide them with a workable administrative system for operating as an effective construction team, to produce a successful project.

Topics

Project delivery methods and systems

Explores project delivery methodologies of traditional design-bid-build, design/build, construction management, guaranteed maximum price, and public private partnership relationships. Various contractual provisions are also reviewed.

Documentation

Students will review the best practices of information technology tools that are positively impacting project administration including the use of electronic project administration. Examines critical project documentation and reports with real-world examples of day-to-day activities on the job.

Meetings and negotiations

Shows the importance of why structured project progress meetings, change order negotiations, and partnering workshops are utilized for the most effective results of commitment, based on excellent communications methods.

Pre-construction operations

Reviews advertising and award phase process, pre-bid meetings, field office organization and planning, pre-construction conferences, bonding, and the development of a QC program. Analyzes constructability reviews. Students will become familiar with the latest federal, state, DOT and local standards.

Acquisition strategies

Students will investigate several computer applications and processes necessary for the procurement of design and construction contracts.

Construction operations

Addresses planning, scheduling, safety, construction materials, workmanship, field operations, and team approaches to successful project administration. The shop drawing and engineering process is also reviewed.

Financial management

This topic reflects the importance of proper budgeting and funding of projects. Value engineering, cash flow management, measuring progress payments, and earned value reports are discussed. Claims and disputes procedures are reviewed. The change management process is emphasized.

Project closeout

Shows students how a successful project is closed out including acceptance of the work, substantial completion, warranties, liquidated damages, punch listing, and finally preparations for final project closeout.
