Director's Welcome

Welcome to the University of Maryland's Project Management Center for Excellence in the A. James Clark School of Engineering. The programs we offer were developed under the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, however, the program has been designed for engineers, architects and any professional with a technical background. Actually, 80% of our graduate students are from technical backgrounds other than civil engineering, including information technology, mechanical engineering, fire protection engineering, electrical engineering, and other technical disciplines.

When looking for a graduate degree, I knew I wanted something that would allow me to build upon my technical engineering skills, as well as delve deeper into the planning and construction element of the industry in which I was already working. Thanks to the Clark School, I knew I had gained the tools and educational components I needed to do anything I wanted with my career. Odessa Phillip President and CEO, Assedo Consulting; Graduate, Master of Engineering (MEng) Technical skills are important, but in order to move up at any company, project management skills are a must. Maryam Dadabhoy HDR, inc; Graduate, Master of Engineering (MEng) My master’s will be valuable for job promotion. It also makes people feel comfortable having a project manager with the education to back it up. Bethel Abate Project Engineer, DC Water; Graduate, Master of Engineering (MEng) The real life application of the content in which the courses were taught is the most meaningful aspect of UMD’s Project Management Program. I have used something from every class that I took in the program at some point in my career. The flexibility of the program was great; I could work a full time job and never miss a class, especially with access to the recorded lectures to view at any time. Daniel “Keith” Thompson AST-Technical Manager, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center / Wallops Flight Facility; Graduate, Master of Engineering (MEng) It has been a great semester and [Managing Projects in a Dynamic Environment (ENCE624) has been] one of the best classes i have taken in the program! Tommy Le I took ENCE422 as an elective two semesters ago, and I'm glad I did! Having mastered cash flow analysis, a large chunk of the FE exam was suspiciously easy for me. Will Harris I'm finishing up Navy projects in Cameroon. My unit deployed to Spain this past February and I was assigned to lead a detachment here about four months ago. I really think I could write a book about my project experiences. A big part of why we (were successful) is directly attributable to the things I learned at UMD. I have used every single course I took. Robert Warren United States Navy; Graduate, Master of Engineering (MEng) I knew the PMBOK principles and methods we discussed with you in ENCE320 were pretty significant to the career I was choosing for myself, but what I did not know the extent to which I would someday use them. Today, I find my myself applying just as much PM knowledge as I do with structures and transportation, if not more. Planning and scheduling are gradually becoming a critical part of my work. Daniel Wungko ENCE662 is an excellent introduction to the discipline of project management as well as the University of Maryland. I look forward to continuing my coursework toward the masters in project management. Maegan Helble I was a remote student and the technology was easy to navigate and work within to get the results I needed. Every time I had a question or a concern it was resolved in a very timely manner and as a project manager that meant a great deal to me. The Project Management Masters or Doctorate program at the University of Maryland is an elite program that would only further enhance any current project manager’s toolkit. Michael O’Connor Director Strategy and Project Management, Medtronic; Graduate, Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) The faculty is phenomenal. Each has experience working in a different field, such as architecture, construction, and government. Angela Shedel Director of Community Resilience Planning, Taylor Engineering; Graduate, Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD)
